A code of conduct for locksmiths

The Master Locksmiths Association (MLA) has created a code of conduct to cover the four main areas of locksmith services and help tradesmen to meet their obligations. The code includes guidelines for installations, key duplication, retail products and service calls. The aim is to ensure that every locksmith will be able to determine the needs of consumers and deliver a fantastic level of service.

One area where locksmiths need to take a great deal of care is when reporting to a property to rectify a lock out. When this occurs it is essential that the locksmith asks to see identification or proof of ownership before opening the property. If they fail to ask for this the tradesman could be unwillingly involved in a criminal act. For public safety and to protect the integrity of the locksmith services should be refused if identification cannot be provided.

Not every locksmith in the UK is part of the MLA but their code is a valuable guide for all tradesmen. The guidance it offers can help them to deliver the highest level of service and prioritise the needs of consumers. You can find the code on the MLA website alongside other important information and useful links.
